Honorary Consul of Finland in Florence

The following text is an excerpt from the exhibition catalog.

As the Honorary Consul of Finland in Florence and having personally appreciated Finnish values for many years, it is my pleasure to welcome Markku Piri to Florence, the first city to host his Italian exhibition tour, which later moves on to Rome and Venice.

I wish to extend my thanks to our Mayor, Dario Nardella, and to the Florentine authorities for granting access to Sale Fabiani in Palazzo Medici Riccardi.

This is a major event, which I am glad to support and share with Janne Taalas, Ambassador of Finland to Italy, as it opens the celebrations of the centenary of Finland’s independence in our country, and I am proud for the tribute Florence is paying to this historic and cultural anniversary.

When I first met Markku Piri almost two years ago, I was immediately impressed by the gracious way he introduced himself, and I hold him in high regard for his good taste, creativity, great passion and talent as well as the deep love for his country.

As I went through the works he was preparing for the Italian tour, it was no surprise to find all these values reflected in them. In Markku Piri’s continuous search for beauty, in the colours and designs of his paintings, textiles and works in glass, and in his sensitivity to nature and harmony, I immediately recognised the same skill and professional pride I have so often seen in the boat builders working at Nautor’s Swan, a Finnish company very close to my heart. A devotion to craftsmanship is one of the distinctive and inspiring themes running through Piri’s work.

From the early stages on, Markku Piri has spared no effort to bring this exhibition to the Italian audience, and I am sure that visitors will enjoy his extraordinary works of art. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of this exhibition tour for increasing cultural and historic awareness and rapport between Finland and Italy.
Fair winds to Markku!
