This series has its origin in Florence, from the architecture and the interior of the first exhibition of Markku Piri in the Palazzo Medici Riccardi, among others from the Michelangelesque staircase in the Palazzo. Here, the artist wanted to create respectfully, but also with a little smile, objects which are timelessly archaic in their forms, and lush in their decor. The ancient glass tradition and the artistic ideas of the present times greet each other in a grand manner.

In the Archaic series, Markku Piri wanted to create something timeless, something that could be created today or tomorrow, or in the 1950s, or in the 1500s, or even 2000 years ago. The collaboration with Lasismi Co-Operative’s young Masters Joonas Laakso, Kaappo Lähdesmäki and Kimmo Reinikka (who has special skills on the surface treatments) with these objects was close and intense, and the artist participated personally with the various surface treatments. Elegant play of earth colours, glossy and frosted surfaces, and three-dimensional cut effects create the whole. The poetic and tongue-in-cheek names of the objects in the Archaic series are important, too.
