This series has its origin in Florence, from the architecture and the interior of the first exhibition of Markku Piri in the Palazzo Medici Riccardi, among others from the Michelangelesque staircase in the Palazzo. Here, the artist wanted to create respectfully, but also with a little smile, objects which are timelessly archaic in their forms, and lush in their decor. The ancient glass tradition and the artistic ideas of the present times greet each other in a grand manner.

In free form glass blowing, the artisan blower and the artist’s vision come together with what the situation and material chances bring along. Sometimes this works, miraculously, as in this Jar of Essential Extracts. There is a luminous frosted quality to the glass (not so typical of glass), the grey band around seems random although intended. The surface treatment, etching-like cuts on the bottom in the semi-transparent glass add to the mystery.
