This series has its origin in Florence, from the architecture and the interior of the first exhibition of Markku Piri in the Palazzo Medici Riccardi, among others from the Michelangelesque staircase in the Palazzo. Here, the artist wanted to create respectfully, but also with a little smile, objects which are timelessly archaic in their forms, and lush in their decor. The ancient glass tradition and the artistic ideas of the present times greet each other in a grand manner.

Can there be a sense of tongue-in-cheek or humour in art? Markku Piri’s intention with these Archaic series objects was to inject them with so much character that the objects would seem to be alive. The refined surface treatments, the elegant play of colours and contrasts, keep the humour of this work in place: This is A Bottle of Volatile Perfume. Joonas Laakso of the Lasismi group captured the shape to perfection, and the artist much enjoyed the close collaboration with Kimmo Reinikka, carving out the surface treatments.
